Pokémon Day 2026 marked a huge milestone as the franchise officially celebrated its 30th anniversary, and this year’s presentation truly felt like a celebration of everything Pokémon has built over three decades. While the new Gen 10 games announcement and mobile game updates grabbed headlines, the biggest long-term impact may come from what’s happening with the Pokémon Trading Card Game!

In case you are out of the loop, Pokémon Day is celebrated every February 27 to honor the release date of the original 1996 Japanese versions of Pokémon Red and Green, the games that started it all. Each year, The Pokémon Company marks the occasion with fun events, game updates and big announcements, usually shared during a livestream called Pokémon Presents.

30th Anniversary set incoming!

The highlight for TCG players and collectors was the reveal of a special 30th anniversary set launching this October. For the first time ever, a Pokémon TCG expansion will release simultaneously worldwide in participating markets. That’s a huge shift from the traditional model where Japan launches first and the international versions follow months later. The teaser trailer celebrated the game’s history by showing off iconic cards like Base Set Charizard and the Crystal Lugia from Aquopolis, before closing on new key art featuring Mew and Mewtwo alongside the tagline “The future awaits”. Both Pokémon appeared with an opalescent sheen, which could hint at a brand-new card rarity or mechanic specially designed for this milestone release. Some also speculate this could be a return of Delta Species Pokémon, but only time will tell.

While the official name hasn’t been confirmed, many are expecting something along the lines of “Celebration Collection”, especially after earlier trademark discoveries. The October timing is no coincidence either. The original Pokémon TCG debuted in Japan in October 1996, and previous anniversary sets such as 2021’s Celebrations also launched in October. Pokémon has clarified that although this special expansion will release globally at the same time, future regular sets won’t follow this simultaneous schedule. But who knows, if it all goes well with this set, we may have simultaneous global releases more often, which will definitely impact the Pokémon market. Like many other special holiday sets, products will roll out over several months. Even so, the fact Pokémon is trying a coordinated global launch alone, makes this one of the most historic TCG releases in years.

Pokémon TCG Live and Pocket Updates

Beyond the anniversary set, the TCG ecosystem continues to expand digitally as well. With new free gameplay items being gifted in Pokémon TCG Live and limited-time missions and rewards, tied to the 30th anniversary, on Pokémon TCG Pocket. Mobile TCG players have a lot to look after this year. It’s clear 2026 is shaping up to be a major year for casual and competitive players alike!

Gen 10 Announced: Pokémon Winds & Waves!

Of course, Pokémon Day wouldn’t be complete without major video game announcements. The presentation officially revealed Generation 10 with the announcement of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, two new main-series entries coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027. Set across windswept islands and a vast ocean region, the games introduce 3 new starter Pokémon: Browt, Pombon and Gecqua. Two new Pikachu variants, Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu were also teased. While these games are still a year away, the reveal marks the beginning of a brand-new era for the franchise and sets the tone for where Pokémon is heading next.

Worlds + Pokémon Champions updates

Competitive players also have plenty to look forward to with Pokémon Champions launching in April 2026 on Nintendo Switch. Designed as a battle-focused title with Pokémon HOME connectivity, it will allow players to bring over their Pokémon and compete in structured formats. The game will feature a Battle Pass system with both free and paid rewards. Champions will also take center stage at the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco, which promises to be the largest competitive Pokémon event ever, alongside the debut of the new PokémonXP fan convention.

All the game news you need to know about

There was also plenty of nostalgia to go around. Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are now available on Nintendo Switch, allowing fans to revisit Kanto once again, this time with Pokémon HOME transfer support. Meanwhile, Pokémon Legends: Z-A - Mega Dimension DLC introduced Mega Garchomp Z through a special in-game encounter event, continuing the push toward Mega Evolution’s return. Pokopia, the new Animal Crossing like game featuring Ditto will be released next week. A special Rotom DJ form was announced for the game, allowing players to play the iconic music from the main-line games.

Mobile titles weren’t left out either. Pokémon GO is celebrating with massive Kanto-themed events, Pokémon UNITE is adding the Legendary Birds as playable characters and other live-service games like Pokémon Sleep, Pokémon Café and Pokémon Masters EX are rolling out anniversary-themed content.

Overall, Pokémon Day 2026 felt like a celebration of both the franchises' history and its future. For many fans, Gen 10 may have been the headline moment, but for the TCG collectors and players, the first-ever globally synchronized anniversary set could end up being the most impactful announcement of them all. With a worldwide launch this October and more details still to come, the road to Pokémon’s 30th Anniversary is only just getting started!
